THE CATHOLIC NEWS Thursday, September 28, 1978 NEW YORK New Opus Dei Centers Opened New Opus Dei Center at 330 Riverside Drive In 1928, in Madrid, a twenty-six year old priest established Opus Del. Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer began his inspired work in which he was soon joined by thousands of men and women seeking to discover the way to sanctity in the midst of the world and as they pursued their vocations as professional people, laborers, artists, single men and women, housewives, husbands, diocesan priests. No matter what they were called upon to do each day, they found through Opus Dei that the call to perfection was compatible with -their daily living. In a prayerful spirit, ordinary work should be a means of sanctification. Daily duties should be their way of fulfilling the demands of an active apostolate. Monsignor Escriva taught that prayer, work and apostolate should come together in the day-to-day experience of every Christian in all walks of life. In fact, the efforts of Christian men and women to extend the Kingdom of God, their apostolate, cannot be separated from the daily circumstances of each one's life, because, as he wrote in 1932: "they are part of the Church. Their mission ... is fulfilled in their profession, their job, their family and among their colleagues and friends." How like the sound of these words to those of the Second Vatican Council! Lumen Gentium stated: By reason of their special vocation it belongs to the laity to seek the Kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and by directing them according to God's will ... They are called by God that, being led by the spirit of the Gospel; they may contribute to the sanctification of the world; as from within like leaven by fulfilling their own particular duties. When Monsignor Escriva died in Rome on June 26, 1975, there were more than six ty thousand men and women of every race and nation who were following him, as members of Opus Del, along the "divine paths of the earth" that he had opened up in 1928. Today, thousands continue to follow-hoping that they too may learn how to turn all of the circumstances and events of their lives into occasions of proving their love of God in the service of the Church and all of the members of God's human family. We, in the. Archdiocese of New York, have been blessed by the presence of our brothers and sisters who have found in this association a special opportunity to fulfill the Gospel message: "This is the will of God your sanctification."
