to be done. They have to study constantly theology; they must give spiritual guidance to very many souls, hear many confessions, preach tirelessly and pray a great deal. Their hearts must always be focused on the tabernacle where he who has chosen us to be his own is really present. Though they will meet up with difficulties like everyone else, their life is a wonderful self-surrender full of joy." (A Priest Forever, pp. 3-4). Of course, the self-surrendèr required of a good priest is possible only through a constant strugglè to cultivate the indispensable virtue of humility. In this virtue, as in all others, Msgr. Josemaria Escriva reached heroic heights. In fact, his lifelong motto was: "I have to pass unnoticed and disappear, so that Jesus alone may be in the limelight/' echoing St. Johii the Baptist's "I must decrease; He must increase." How graphically did Msgr. Escriva speak about the virtue of humility! In a homily on this very topic he said: "I am sure you know families that have a valuable but fragile decoration at home, a vase, for example. Have you not noticed how they take care, lest it be broken? Then one finds one day the baby, while playing, knocks it to the floor, leaving that precious heirloom in a thousand pieces. The disappointment is great, but the remedy is applied right away. The pieces are carefully gathered up and patiently glued together, and the restored heirloom is as beautiful as before. "When the object is made of china or simple pottery, ordinarily the repair consists of some bands of iron or other metal thàt hold the pieces together. And the old memento, cracks and all, takes on a delightful originality. "Let us bring this lesson to our own inner life. Confronted with our miseries and sins and mistakes, even though - by God's grace - they be inconsequential, let us turn to prayer, saying to our Father: Lord, take my weakness, my wretchedness, the broken bits of my life and mend them back together. Then thanks to your pardon and support and my sorrow, I will be stronger and better-looking than before! A consoling prayer, one for us to repeat when this earthenware of ours begins to crack." (Humility, Scepter Booklets, pp. 3-4). It would be salutary for Christians to drink abundantly from the numerous writings of Msgr. Escriva and to decisively respond to his call for sanctity in the middle of the work-a-day world. As the opening point of the spiritual best-seller The Way whispers into the ears of millions of individuals: "Don't let your life be sterile. Bé useful. Blaze a trail. Shine forth with the light of your faith and of your love. With your apostolic life wipe out the slimy and filthy mark left by the impure sowers of hatred. Arid light up all the ways of the earth with the fire of Christ that you carry in your heart." 67 Opus Dei: opiniones de protagonistas |
