intercom Volume Nineteen Number One February 1989 Intercom is published by the Catholic Communications Institute of Ireland for priests and religious. Monsignor Escriva Archbishop Gaetano Alibrandi, recently Apostolic Nuncio in Ireland Ten years ago, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the foundation of Opus Dei, 1 wrote about the great figure of the founder, Monsignor Escrivá, as I remembered him and reflected on his personality, a personality hallowed with the supernatural charism of virtue and sanctity. Striding this earthly stage with heroic practice of priestly qualities, Monsignor Escrivá's life left behind a luminous wake brought about by his incomparable love for God and for human kind_ The international institution he founded beats the hallmarks of the zeal and spirit of Monsignor Escrivá. Ten years later, in this 60th year since its foundation, my esteem and love for Monsignor Escrivá have grown enormous in parallel with the spiritual and organisational development of Opus Dei. The number of members has increased considerably. In the light of the teachings of the founder, and under the charismatie stimulus of Monsignor Alvaro del Portillo, the pastoral and apostolic work has developed in a continuous' way, and the spiritual blending of doctrine and love of God has reached all sectors of con- with a longing to see this worthy priest temporary society. In a climate of un- recognised< soon by the Church as an certainty for various intellectual and example of Christian goodness to be imitsocial movements, Opus Dei distinguishes ated, I am convinced that the Personal itself by its hard-working, healthy and Prelature of Opus Dei will be enriched Christian activity, bringing light where in the near future by the proclamation there is darkness, hope where there is of the newly Blessed, the first fruit among despair, love where there is hate, gentle- other stars of sanctity of Opus Dei which ness where there is bitterness, good shin the heaven of the saints. where there re' In the course of these ten years, by a decision of the Holy Father, the Personal Prelature of Opus Dei was born. This was a solution outlined by Vatican II, longed for by the father founder, brought into being by the Holy See. To the myopic, and often jaundiced, eyes of some liberal critics, the establishment of Opus Dei as a Personal -Prelature seemed to be prejudicial to the diocesan jurisdiction' of 'bishops. Nothing could be farther from the truth: Opus Dei, in its new legal situation as a Personal Prelature, maintains the respect for established ecclesiastical authority it always had, following the teaching of its holy founder. It has given an admirable example of apostolic fervour, of evident humility, of devotion and of love for the hierarchy. Thrõughout this whole ten-year period, the stature of Monsignor Escrivá has grown enormously; his eminently priestly qualities have been studied and admired; his holiness of fife has become known through the study of his supernatural virtues, andd clear steps have been made in the process of beatification towards the raising of the Servant of God to the altars supreme acknowledgement by the Church of the heroic perfection of Monsignor Escrivã. The, favours granted by God through his intercession are numerous, and the miracles required for his beatification have already been examined by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. 81 Opus Dei: opiniones de protagonistas |
